Lynn has a very diverse population and one of the great things about this is the variety of restaurants with authentic cuisine from different parts of the world. Montecristo is one of those places, a small hole-in-the-wall restaurant in downtown Lynn that serves great food. Owned and operated by Salvadorans, its menu includes many interesting dishes that you won’t find in other places.

One great thing about this place is that they’re open for breakfast. I recommend that you try the huevos con chorizo (scrambled eggs with Mexican sausage) or for a meatless breakfast, try the huevos con papas (scrambled eggs with potatoes) or the  plato tipico (eggs with tomatoes and onions).

Special treats that you won’ t find at other places are the Tamales de Chiplini,  a legume from Central America that is used for its aroma and flavor. A favorite of mine is the Plato Mixto which includes one tamal, one pupusa, yuca (also known as cassava, a root vegetable very common in South America), fried plantain and chicharron (pork stripe). If you are a vegetarian and/or don’t eat meat, there are several options in the menu you can try such as Cheese Pupusas (made with corn dough and white cheese), yuca, or a cheese quesadilla.

You will notice that the tortillas are different to the ones you find at other Mexican restaurants; these tortillas are typical from Central America, small, thick, soft and freshly made they are a special treat!

Montecristo is located in downtown Lynn, between Market Street and Washington, a block from the Police Station. You can eat in, order takeout or delivery, and they take credit cards. Buen provecho!

When I said soon, I meant VERY soon! We tried it yesterday, Raul, thanks to you, and as Arnold says in The Terminator, “We’ll be back!” It was excellent, a very different “typical” breakfast mix. Loved the fried plantain and the refried beans especially. Friendly wait staff, and very clean. A gem!
