Classical alumn elected to serve on national board

Vicente Gonzalez

Vicente Gonzalez, a student at Cornell University, was elected to serve a two-year term as student representative on the Mortar Board National Council, the 10-member board of directors for Mortar Board, a prominent national honor society for college seniors.

Vicente was elected to serve his term as one of the board’s two student representatives at the 2010 Mortar Board National Conference, held July 23-25 in Chicago. As a National Council member, Vicente will meet with other national leaders of Mortar Board, travel as an official representative, and make decisions that guide the long-term future of the organization. His term ends in July 2012.

While at the Mortar Board National Conference, Vicente accepted the Silver Torch Award on behalf of the Der Hexenkreis chapter at Cornell University. His chapter was one of 77 chapters to receive the award, presented to those chapters meeting chapter management standards while exemplifying the ideals of scholarship, leadership and service.

Vicente is a 2007 graduate of Lynn Classical High School in Lynn, Mass. He is currently working to obtain his B.S. in industrial and labor relations with a projected graduation date of May 2011. In addition to serving as the communications chair for the Der Hexenkreis chapter of Mortar Board at Cornell, Vicente is also a member of Lambda Upsilon Lambda and was presented with the 2010 E.B. White ’21 Award for best new opinion column for his work in the Cornell Daily Sun. He is the son of Jose Vicente Gonzalez and Juana R. De Gonzalez of Lynn, Mass.

Mortar Board is the premier national honor society recognizing college seniors for outstanding achievement in scholarship, leadership and service. Since its founding in 1918, the organization has grown from the four founding chapters to 228 chartered collegiate chapters with nearly a quarter of a million initiated members across the nation. The Der Hexenkreis chapter at Cornell University was chartered in 1918 and currently has 28 members.

Mortar Board provides opportunities for continued leadership development, promotes service to colleges and universities and encourages lifelong contributions to the global community.
