Sixth and seventh graders from Mrs. Foley’s Religion Classes at St. Mary’s held a book drive for Lynn Community Health Center’s Reach Out and Read program. They collected hundreds of books. “These students understand what an impact books have made in their lives and wanted to share their old favorites with those who are in need,” said Mrs. Foley. “They look forward to doing it again later this year!”
Reach out and Read is a program that emphasizes pediatric literacy in the context of primary care. Children ages birth through five years old are given a book at every check up, and the doctor talks to the parents about the importance of reading aloud on a child’s development. To further promote literacy among young patients, volunteers in the Health Center’s waiting rooms read to children and offer them a gently used book to take home. The health center collects more than 5,000 gently used books each year for volunteers to give away. If you are interested in donating or volunteering please contact Clare Hayes, 781-596-2502 x778.
