Visionspace Gallery, along with CRUZ @art and the Downtown Lynn Cultural District have teamed up to transform a once non-descript pedestrian zone into ART WAY, an inviting, bright and interactive art installation in the MBTA tunnel located between Union and Mt. Vernon Streets.
After receiving a grant from the New England Foundation for the Arts, Visionspace Gallery decided on the tunnel as the next location in their public art series. The tunnel was pressure washed, painted and prepped for the art. The gallery then commissioned artist Jason Cruz and the CRUZ @rt Team to bring life into the area. Jason and his team transformed the tunnel using poetry, positivity and bold, vibrant colors to create three separate murals that provide an engaging backdrop for the daily travelers through Central Square. A “reflection wall” was also installed creating an instant
selfie opportunity under the words “You are a work of art…” written in five different languages that reflect Lynn’s diversity.
On December 4th, a celebration, aptly titled “ART WAY; A Light at the end of the Tunnel” will begin at 4pm, giving the public an opportunity to enjoy the art, meet the artists, and take photos. The celebration will feature performances from three local spoken word artists; Enzo, Lester and Patrick as well as a musical performance by AMaeSingz. There will also be complimentary hot chocolate and cookies served up by Visionspace.
ART WAY is the latest in a flurry of public art activity in Central Square sponsored by the Downtown Lynn Cultural District. The newly minted Public Art Commission is charged with encouraging more public art throughout the city.
