Review by Lynn resident Steve Duffy –
This family dramedy tell the story of Elliot Anderson (Kevin Costner), a grandfather, who has to fight for custody of his biracial granddaughter, Eloise (Jilliam Estell), against the girl’s father (Andre Holland) and grandmother (Octavia Spencer).
Rowena hires her slick lawyer brother, Jeremiah (Anthony Mackie), to help her battle in court, which leads to an ugly and daunting court battle.
Costner delivers one of his best performances in years. Spencer gives a solid performance as the big-hearted full of love, Grandma Wee Wee.
Overall, “Black or White” is a touching film about family and race. Although at times, the realistic and tough social questions do seem politically incorrect.
PG-13 for strong language, thematic material involving drug use and drinking, and for a fight
