Review by Lynn resident Steve Duffy –
Is Sean Penn the new “old guy” action hero?
It has been a few years since we last saw Penn taking on the lead role in a film. Penn portrays Jim Terrier, an international operative who is trying to leave his past behind him after he is involved in a politician’s assassination. He has to abandon his girlfriend, Annie (Jasmine Trinca), and create a new life for himself. Eight years later, we find him being targeting for his sins and trying to get his life back on track.
Penn definitely has the vitality for this role. He seems to be in the best shape of his life, which makes his stunts seem all the more believable.
The picks for the supporting cast in this film were perfect: Javier Bardem, Idris Elba, and Jasmine Trinca. However, they all seemed to lack the appeal to make this a fun film to watch.
Some of the action scenes are thrilling, but overall the storyline is predictable but bearable.
R for strong violence, language and some sexuality
Run Time: 1 hr. 55 min.
