Review by Steve Duffy –
The wait is over! The most anticipated sequel from 2012’s blockbuster The Avengers is here.
The film opens with the mighty Avengers: Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Chris Evans (Captain America), Mark Ruffalo (The Hulk), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow) and Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye) in mid-battle trying to reclaim Loki’s scepter from the last remaining Hydra agent.
Fast forward a little: trying to bring peace to the world, Stark designs an artificial intelligence machine “Ultron” (voiced by James Spader), but the machine goes rogue and wants to destroy the Avengers and the world.
The chemistry is great among the heroes, especially the hilarious dialogue between them. As always, Robert Downey Jr. shines with some of the movies best one-liners.
New to the series are the telekinetic Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and the lighting speed Quicksilver (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), genetically enhanced twin siblings.
The downside to having too many characters is that each of their story lines feel rushed and their moments to shine are fleeting. The action scenes are intensely satisfying and pack a big punch.
The Avengers is pure popcorn fun from start to finish even if it doesn’t outshine the original.
PG-13 for intense sequences of sci-fi action, violence and destruction, and for some suggestive comments
Run Time: 2 hr. 30 min.
