Review by Steve Duffy –
It’s been three years since the Bellas of Barden University won their first national title. As we all know, the high-notes of life hardly last. After a costume malfunction by Fat Amy during a Presidential performance, the darlings of the a capella world are banned from competing.
In hopes of being reinstated, the Bellas travel to Copenhagen to compete in the World A Capella Championship. Their new revivals are a techno German group named the Das Sound Machine.
Normally a fan of Anna Kendrick, I found her performance in this film to be kind of bland. Rebel Wilson is the biggest scene stealer in the film and the only reason to see this sequel.
Elizabeth Banks (in her directorial debut) and John Michael Higgins both return as the snide judges. Hailee Steinfeld joins the Bellas as fresh-faced Barden freshman Emily.
Some of the Bellas that don’t get a lot of the spotlight, but still deliver, are soft-spoken Lilly (Hana Mae Lee), powerhouse Ester Dean (Cynthia Rose), and new exchange student Flo (Chrissie Fit).
The music is far better with some great selections and sing-offs.
Even though there is a lot of repetition of what we all loved about “Pitch Perfect”, it is still worth going to see.
PG-13 for innuendo and language
Runtime: 1 hr. 54 min.
