5 Questions is a feature by Steve Duffy –
Russell Hitchcock is one half of the Australian band “Air Supply”, along with Graham Russell. They formed the group back in 1975 and are still going strong. They continue to play over 100 shows a year and are bringing their melt-your-heart ballads to the Lynn Auditorium.
SD: It’s been 40 years last month since meeting Graham. That is longer than some marriages. What is the secret to your long-lasting friendship?
RH: We never got married [he laughs]. We have a mutual respect for each other. It has been a great partnership. He writes the songs and I sing them. Plus, it helps that we really enjoy performing together on stage.
SD: You are still playing over 100 shows per year and releasing new music. What keeps you motivated?
RH: The fans! We have been really lucky enough to have a few hit songs, too! I am always amazed that our fans want to still see us. For me, performing is all about seeing the reactions from the audience and how our music makes them feel. They are fantastic!
SD: What is your favorite song to perform on stage?
RH: It is most definitely “All Out of Love.” We recorded it in 1978 and it is still our most requested song. We always close the show with it.
SD: What is it about Air Supply that keeps the fans coming back for more?
RH: We give them honesty. We really pour our hearts out to them whether it is on stage or in our music. Our music gives them a connection to the past – it may be memories of good times or bad, but our music was there for them, hopefully helping them.
SD: What can fans expect from your show here at the Lynn Auditorium?
RH: Of course, they will hear our greatest hits. Graham will be performing a special song. We have some new and exciting (younger) band members. It is going to be a really great show. Come prepared to participate, we love to engage the audience. We want to see them singing and dancing in the aisles.
