Jurassic World

Review by Steve Duffy –

JWJurassic Park opened 22 years ago and invited moviegoers into a world full of genetically engineered dinosaurs and the people who create them. Unfortunately, the fourth entry in the dino-franchise maybe bigger and better, but follows the same formula as the 1993 film.

Jurassic World is now a luxury themed resort operated by billionaire Simon Masrani (Irrfan Khan). According to the park director, Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard), the public has grown tired of the dinosaurs and now they want them bigger, louder, and with more teeth.

She enlists geneticist Henry Wu (B.D Wong) to create a new dinosaur hybrid called Indominus Rex, who happens to be a dangerous predatory dinosaur that was raised in isolation. Also employed by Isla Nublar, is Navy veteran Owen Grady (Chris Pratt) who is trying to domesticate some voracious Velociraptors.

Of course, Indominus escapes on the same weekend that Dearing’s two nephews (Nick Robinson and Ty Simpkins) come for a weekend visit. The younger of the two is obsessed with dinosaurs and the other is preoccupied with girls and could care less about the amazing world that surrounds him.

When the Indominus Rex escapes, Grady’s insane boss (Vincent D’Onofrio) devises a plan to capture him by using the velociraptors to track his scent and bring him down.

The human component of the film is not as exciting when you compare it to the dinosaurs and the lack of chemistry between Howard and Pratt which makes their blooming relationship very difficult to watch.

Since CGI effects are now common in all movies, Jurassic World still does an astonishing job making the dinosaur realistic looking.

You may not be on the edge of your seat as you were while watching Jurassic Park, but Jurassic World is the perfect popcorn summer blockbuster that will have you falling in love with dinosaurs all over again.

PG-13 for intense sequences of science-fiction violence and peril
