5 Questions is a feature by Steve Duffy –
Lacey Schwimmer of ABC’s Dancing with the Stars and her friends are bringing their dance moves to the North Shore Music Theatre for Ballroom with a Twist.
SD: Did you always know you wanted to dance?
LS: I had no choice, I was born into it [laughs]. Both of my parents are dancers and they actually met while my dad was teaching a dance class. I really had no other options.
SD: How did you get involved with Ballroom with a Twist?
LS: They approached me last year, because they had a cancellation and I jumped at the chance. It is really a great show to be involved with.
SD: Why do you think there has been a resurgence of popularity in ballroom dancing?
LS: It’s great! I mean, it has always been around, and of course, more popular at different times in history. It kind of fizzled out in the 70’s, but thanks to shows like DWST for reintroducing it to the American public and making it cool again.
SD: After performing on SYTYCD and DWTS, have you accomplished all your dreams for your dance career?
LS: Yes! At the age of 17, I won all the awards that I wanted. I was done competing. Soon after, my brother had just competed on SYTYCD, so I thought I would give it a try. After that, I was asked to dance on DWTS. Television work was never a goal for me, it just happened.
SD: What surprises can the audience expect from the show?
LS: We have a really great cast: Dmitry Chaplin, Chelsie Hightower, and Tristan Macmanus. We are all young and fun, and all bring lots of energy to the show. Since we are all different kinds of dancers, it brings a lot of excitement to the show. We perform all kinds of dancing from hip hop to break dancing. There are also live singers. The show is a lot of fun and the audience is going to have a blast.
