Kinky Boots

Strut on over to the Boston Opera House to see Broadway’s smash Kinky Boots!

Based on the 2005 film and inspired by a true story, Kinky Boots follows Charlie Price (Steven Booth), an aspiring young businessman who is forced to give up his dreams of living the London city life in order to save his family business in Northern England. When Charlie suddenly inherits his father’s shoe factory, he finds unexpected inspiration in the form of Lola (Kyle Taylor Parker) a fabulous entertainer in need of some sturdy stilettos. As Charlie and Lola work to turn the factory around, this unlikely pair finds that they have more in common than they ever dreamed possible… and discovers that when you change your mind about someone, you can change your whole world.

As Charlie, Steven Booth was a little bland, but by the second act, he came to life on stage. His vocal performance was great.

Kyle Taylor Parker is delicious as the stiletto wearing drag queen, Lola. Standing alone on the stage and engulfed in a pool of light, Parker’s song “Soul of a Man” is powerful and filled with raw emotion. It was definitely the audience’s favorite moment of the show.

The rest of the cast is stellar. The costumes are beyond amazing and look like they could be seen in any Las Vegas show. Set designer David Rockwell has created a stage friendly factory space that moves with ease and is easy for the actors to navigate around.

Although I did not find the soundtrack memorable, Cyndi Lauper’s score for “Kinky Boots’’ has some great numbers. You may not be humming all the way home, but you will enjoy them in the moment.

The show’s most moving song, a duet between Booth and Parker, is “Not My Father’s Son.” The finale song, “Raise You Up/Just Be,” is enthusiastic and fun.

Kinky Boots is heartwarming, exuberant, and sassy! But be warned, after seeing it, you may want to go out and purchase your own pair of Kinky Boots.

Run time: Approximately 2 hours and 20 minutes, including one intermission.

Kinky Boots is now playing at the Boston Opera House through August 30th. For more information about the show and to purchase tickets visit www.broadway.com
