Review by Steve Duffy –
Mike (Jesse Eisenberg), is an unmotivated mini-mart clerk and the local town pothead. He is content living the small-town life in Liman, West Virginia with his girlfriend, Phoebe (Kristen Stewart).
As Mike and Phoebe get ready to fly to Hawaii (where he wants to propose), he has a panic attack and Phoebe realizes there has to be more to their bong-filled lives. What these two screw-ups quickly find out is that Mike is actually a CIA sleeper agent.
When CIA agent Victoria Lasseter (Connie Britton) finds out about a plan that is going to eliminate all the agents of an abandoned secret government program, she activates Mike’s killer instincts making him the target of a CIA manhunt.
American Ultra is definitely not the worst summer movie. It does have a few good moments, but not an enough for you to root for or remember this off-beat story. There are some entertaining cameos by John Leguizamo, Bill Pullman, and Walter Googins.
Eisenberg and Stewart’s chemistry is convincing and makes their performances worth watching.
R for strong bloody violence, language throughout, drug use and some sexual content
