Review by Steve Duffy –
Sister Act is the international smash hit musical based on the mega-hit 1992 film that starred Whoopi Goldberg. When disco diva Deloris Van Cartier (Jeannette Bayardelle) witnesses a murder, she is put in protective custody in one place the cops are sure she won’t be a found: a convent. Disguised as a nun, she finds herself at odds with both the rigid lifestyle and the uptight Mother Superior (Ellen Harvey). Using her unique talents to inspire the choir, Deloris breathes new life into the church, but in doing so blows her cover. Soon it is nun-on-the-run time, but she finds salvation in the heavenly power of her newly found sisterhood.
What made this show so great was the performers. This is definitely a show that would have flopped if it didn’t have a cast of amazing actors and singers.
Bayardelle lights up the stage every time she walks on to it. Her powerful and soulful voice mastered every song she performed.
Ellen Harvey is wonderful as Mother Superior, mixing the right amount of caution and enthusiasm at the arrival of Deloris.
The chemistry among all the sisters is perfect especially with Sister Mary Robert (Leal Van Keuren), Sister Mary Patrick (Jennie Boone), and Sister Mary Lazarus (Tina Johnson).
The entire cast dances and sings wholeheartedly making this on heavenly energetic show.
The overall production is bold, energetic and fun. I find that plays based on successful movies can sometime disappoint, but NSMT’s Sister Act is not one of them. It is a heavenly treat that you don’t want to miss.
