From Pack 80 and Troop 80 –
Saturday, November 7th some of the boys of Pack 80 and Troop 80 took advantage of a fine fall day by taking a day hike in the Lynn Woods. Cub Scouts Kevin Crisman and Nick Mambuca, and Boy Scouts Michael Kelley and Chris Kelley, were joined by their parents, siblings and scout leaders for the trek.
The 3.4 mile hike began from the Great Woods Road entrance and took the troop down the Ox Pasture road, offering some spectacular late fall views. The boys learned some history of the area, including seeing and exploring the “Wolf Pits,” tree and plant identification, and even some geocaching.
At the regular Monday meeting prior to the Saturday hike, the boys had a chance to plan out the hike, learning about hiking safety and what to bring on a day hike. Some meeting time was given over to learning about how to use a compass as well as learning the scout’s “Outdoor code.”
The Monday meeting and Saturday hike helped the boys earn awards towards advancement, as well as learn how to be responsible and respectful while outdoors.
Pack 80 and Troop 80 meet on Monday nights at the Knights of Columbus, Valladolid Council #70 hall on Lynnfield Street. Enrollment is still open for any boy interested in joining the scouts. Visit us on Monday nights for more information.
