Review by Steve Duffy –
Winner of 8 2012 Tony Awards® including best musical, Once is a truly original Broadway experience. Featuring an impressive ensemble of actor/musicians who play their own instruments onstage. Based on the 2006 Irish film, Once tells the enchanting tale of a Dublin street musician who’s about to give up on his dream when a beautiful young woman takes a sudden interest in his haunting love songs. As the chemistry between them grows, his music soars to powerful new heights… but their unlikely connection turns out to be deeper and more complex than your everyday romance.
What I absolutely loved about Once is its simplicity. It is really all about the music. Stuart Ward (Guy) and Dani de Waal (Girl) have a genuine tenderness for each other that makes their performances both touching and moving. Ward’s vocals and guitar playing are superb. De Waal voice is so charged with emotion, I was disappointed that she did not sing more.
The supporting cast is rock solid and perfectly enjoyable to watch as they have dual responsibility as the show musicians and cast.
Once is the best bittersweet and unassuming musical that you don’t want to miss!
Running Time with Intermission: 2 hr. 30 min.
