Review by Steve Duffy –
Ride Along 2 is the sequel to 2014’s surprise hit, Ride Along, starring Kevin Hart (Ben Barber) and Ice Cube (James Payton). Ride Along 2 picks up pretty much immediately where the first film stopped.
Ben and Angela (Tika Sumpter) are planning their wedding while Ben (now a rookie cop) still seeks approval from his future brother-in-law.
When James is asked to go to Miami to track down a suspect on a drug case, Ben begs him to tag along. Once they arrive, they team up with Maya (Olivia Munn), a Miami detective who is working on a case closely related to theirs which focuses their attention on the villainous Antonio Pope (Benjamin Bratt) and his shipping empire.
The formula of the plot follows closely to what you saw in the first Ride Along. Hart still bumbles his way through all his crime-fighting scenes while Cube bullies and snarls his way through them.
The jokes are funnier, especially since adding Ken Jeong into the comedic mix. The action is kept to a minimum to showcase Hart’s funny antics.
Like the first Ride Along, this film is probably going to be a big money-maker, thanks to the Kevin Hart fans, but I would wait to see it when it arrives at Redbox.
Rating: PG-13 for sequences of violence, sexual content, language and some drug material
