Review by Steve Duffy –
As a huge Superman fan, I was not going to let my expectations for this film get too high and I am glad I didn’t, although it is a much better film then Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel.
Following the events after Man of Steel, Gotham City-based vigilante Batman (Ben Affleck) travels to Metropolis to preemptively combat Superman (Henry Cavill), fearing what would happen if the latter is kept unchecked, while another threat endangers humankind.
I don’t want to give away too much so I will keep my review very simple. I was actually more impressed with Affleck’s portrayal of Batman then I thought I was going to be. He was portrayed more as a bully and at times seemed a little disinterested.
Not my favorite Superman, but Cavill is still likeable and capable in his role.
Jesse Eisenberg’s portrayal of billionaire Lex Luther is annoying.
Amy Adams’s Lois Lane was lost in the story, as she worked on a subplot that you already knew the outcome.
Also, for the Wonder Woman fans, Gal Gadot unfortunately does not get enough screen time. I was hoping for more time developing her character: Like why is she in Metropolis? Let’s hope we will see more of Wonder Women in either her own film or in the upcoming Justice League film.
To my surprise, I didn’t realize how close Batman’s Gotham City was to Superman’s Metropolis.
For being an overstuffed and plot weary story, the film is visually beautiful and has some great moments so if you are going to see it, see it in IMAX.
Overall, it was not the superhero smackdown that I was hoping for, but still worth seeing.
Rating: PG-13 for intense sequences of violence and action throughout, and some sensuality
Runtime: 2 hr. 31 min.
