5 Questions is a series by Steve Duffy –
Emmy-winning television star, celebrity stylist, author and fashion designer, Carson Kressley is out to make over the world one person at a time.
Carson can currently be seen as a rotating judge on LOGO’s hit show “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” He will also be one of the celebrity guest panelists on LOGO’s new show “Play for Gay.”
SD: What attracted you to want to be a judge on RPDR?
CK: I have been a fan of drag and RuPual’s show for a long time. I was appearing on “Skin Wars” with RuPaul and he asked me why I have not been on drag race yet. When my schedule finally opened up, I jumped at the chance. I love it! I am amazed that I get paid to do this show. Plus, I get to wear cute outfits.
SD: What do you bring to the judges table that the show may have not had before?
CK: I definitely bring my own unique fashion perspective. I’m really confident in what great fashion is and I love sharing my ideas and knowledge.
SD: How is RPDR changing the face of drag?
CK: First and foremost, it is mainstreaming it. There are so many fans that are moms, college students, straight and gay. The show is more than just people from the LGBT community. Drag is truly entertaining and a great art form. A great drag entertainer can be funny and glamorous. The girls on the show are all creative and gorgeous.
SD: For a lot of people, gayness on TV is still view as an accessory. How do we change that perception?
CK: We have to just be represented. “Queer Eye” really helped put us out there. Our shows go into people’s houses and we have to do it right. What is so great about the power TV, is that you get to know the person, so when you encounter someone different than you, you will not label them. Hopefully, It will make you a friend of theirs and you will be a little more thoughtful about how you treat them.
SD: In your opinion, what basic wardrobe pieces every person should have in their closet?
CK: Everyone need a pair of fantastic jeans. Men need a great classic tailored suit and watch. Women need a great bag and heels. Also, any fabulous accessory can be used to reinvent what you already have. I love sunglasses, because they can really change a look. Most importantly, is to find a color that you love, because it has a power to make you feel good. Color can be your friend. Don’t be afraid of it. I have a new book coming out in October titled, “Does This Book Make My Butt Look Big.” It will have lots of tips and tricks to help you look your best.
