The Be You youth group at St. Stephen’s met this afternoon to be with each other and share what was on their minds following the recent mass shooting at Pulse in Orlando. St. Stephen’s clergy as well as representatives from the Unitarian Church in Swampscott were in attendance.
Originally billed as a “moment of silence,” the group decided to make some noise instead. Lead by Jason Cruz, outside on the steps they took turns mentioning the prejudices and ills of the world and for each mention, everyone would blow on ear-piercing whistles to demonstrate their disapproval. Be You members also shared their dreams of LGBTQ+ acceptance, some breaking into tears.
The group then moved to surround the Pride flag at half-mast and took turns reading the names of the 49 victims.
