The following is a letter sent by Jen Migliore, a candidate for state representative in the 9th Essex District –

Our roads and bridges are falling apart. Our schools are crumbling. Our transportation options in Saugus, Wakefield, and Lynn are deteriorating.

Last month, the state legislature voted to advance a “Millionaires’ Tax” amendment to the Massachusetts Constitution. The amendment, if approved by Massachusetts voters, would impose a 4% tax on yearly income exceeding one million dollars. This tax would increase our state’s revenue by nearly $2 billion and provide essential funding for Massachusetts residents’ most critical needs. But our state representative in the 9th Essex District, Donald Wong, voted against advancing this amendment.

Mr. Wong voted against an amendment that would bring in millions of dollars in desperately needed state aid to our district. He voted against an amendment that would improve education, infrastructure, and transportation for the hard-working families of Saugus, Wakefield and Lynn. Out of a population of 140,000, Mr. Wong voted to protect the interests of only 28 millionaires who reside in these three towns.

Every other state legislator that represents Saugus, Wakefield or Lynn voted to give their constituents a chance to vote on the Millionaires’ Tax. They chose to support an amendment that could benefit the tens of thousands of hard-working families they represent, while Mr. Wong voted to benefit the handful of his constituents who make more than a million dollars a year.

Our infrastructure is crumbling, our schools are underfunded and, just last week, we were denied operational funding for the Lynn-Boston ferry – an essential source of transportation for many local commuters. We need an unrelenting advocate who will demand the funding to revitalize these necessities. We deserve better schools, roads, and public transportation. But we will never get them unless we elect a voice to the State House who will fight for the needs of our district.

We deserve a representative who knows and understands the needs of her constituents. We deserve a representative who will fight for every single resident of our district: not just a few privileged millionaires.

This is VERY disturbing. I recently moved to Lynn and would like to become more involved in decisions which affect my community. I absolutely agree that we need a representative who understands our needs. When is our next election?
