Theatre Review by Steve Duffy –
Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is transported to modern-day New York City, as two young idealistic lovers find themselves caught between warring street gangs, the ‘American’ Jets and the ‘Puerto Rican’ Sharks. Their struggle to survive in a world filled with hate, violence, and prejudice is one of this country’s most innovative, heart-wrenching, and relevant musical dramas of our time. From the first notes to the final breath, West Side Story is one of the greatest love stories of all time.
The entire cast is awesome! Bronson Norris Murphy plays Tony. He delivers a heartfelt performance with a commanding voice.
Transcendent soprano Evy Oritz is stunning as she portrays the innocent and naïve Maria, who feels she must follow her heart, no matter what the consequences might be.
Also making an impression is Michelle Alves, who plays Anita. Her version of “America” unfortunately was a bit muffled and hard to understand at times.
The ensemble leaps, twists, and slides effortlessly through all their dance routines.
The show is packed with some of the most memorable musical numbers that have become Broadway favorites that most will recognize like “I Feel Pretty,” “Tonight,” “America,” “Something’s Coming,” “Somewhere.”
West Side Story is a fantastic musical experience for the entire family.
