D.E.N.C.I.T.Y. stands for Developing Expressions Now Creating Initiatives Through You, and the group has a new initiative stemming from their popular open mic Tuesdays at the Walnut Street Cafe. Mondays starting December 19th, will also include a poetry slam hosted by the first official slam team of the North Shore.
The first hint that this Tuesday’s edition of D.E.N.C.I.T.Y would be different was the presence of slam poetry pioneer Michael Brown. He’s credited with bringing the slam poetry movement from Chicago to Boston (actually, downstairs at the Cantab in Cambridge) in the early 1990’s. Brown, now living in Maine, gave DENCITY host Michelle La Poetica (stage name) her first feature.
Then, cafe employee and slam team member “Red” / Phoenix Rhyzen stepped up to the mic.
The announcement was captured on video:
Tuesday DENCITY nights will continue at the cafe as listed in the Happens Calendar. Mondays will follow a somewhat different open mic format, accompanied with music by Pangea’s Soul and Shira Moss on percussion. Plus, visual art will be on display and for sale with all the proceeds going straight to the artists. Mondays will then wrap up with a slam. These nights are 18+
The team will eventually be listed on the nationwide slam website.
