Theatre review by Steve Duffy –
Altar Boyz is a foot-stomping, rafter-raising, musical comedy about a fictitious Christian boy band on the last night of their national ‘Raise the Praise’ tour. The Boyz are five all-singing, all-dancing heartthrobs from Ohio: Matthew, Mark, Luke, Juan, and Abraham. With their tight harmonies, tight pants, and spectacular choreography, these boyz won’t rest until they lift the soul of every single member of the audience.
The boyz are all exuberance and definitely give 100%. One standout performances was delivered by Michael Jennings Mahoney. He performed “Epiphany,” a very funny Catholic coming-out story. As for vocal performance, my favorite was Sean Mitchell Crosely as Luke. He has a strong and powerful voice. I would have loved him to have more solo time.
The dance moves are heavenly, the harmonies are angelic, and the lyrics are clever. The amazing three-piece band is raised above the performers so there is enough room for them to dance around the stage.
Overall, the show was great fun and maybe not a substitute for church, but you still may get the religious experience you are looking for.
Running Time: 80 minutes with no intermission.
Now playing through April 9, 2017
