Film review by Steve Duffy –
Mitch Buchannon (Dwayne Johnson), the gung-ho leader of the elite Baywatch lifeguard squad, clashes with new recruit Matt Brody (Zac Efron), a disgraced Olympic swimmer brought in as the new face of the organization. However, when a dead body is recovered from a yacht fire, the two must put aside their personal differences and work with their team to stop a criminal mastermind’s drug trafficking operation.
This film is definitely a vehicle to show case Johnson as the star, but sadly the rest of the cast is unused and casted out to sea. Efron’s performance is pretty standard for any of the other comedies that he has been in. I am sure the draw for him was working with the Rock. As the film’s villain, Priyanka Chopra, does a pretty good job.
There are a few laughs that do make the film enjoyable to watch, especially when it comes to the banter between Johnson and Efron.
This film feels more like an extended episode of the original TV show with all the same elements. “Baywatch” will probably not be the global phenomenon that the TV show was, but it sure a lot of mindless fun to watch.
