Finding Neverland

Spread the love

Theatre review by Steve Duffy –

Second star to the right and straight on ’til morning……

Based on the Academy Award®-winning film of the same name, this breathtaking show follows playwright J.M. Barrie as he summons the courage to become the writer – and the man – he yearns to be. Barrie finds the inspiration he’s been missing when he meets the beautiful widow Sylvia and her four young sons: Jack, George, Michael, and Peter.

Delighted by the boys’ hilarious escapades, Barrie conjures the magical world of Neverland and writes a play unlike any the high-society London theatergoers have ever seen. It’s a tremendous risk, but as Barrie himself has discovered— when you believe, you can fly.

Billy Harrigan Tighe is wonderful as J.M. Barrie. His tenor voice is superb. His tender voice never waivers as he sings most of the songs, whether solos or duets.

The chemistry between him, Sylvia (Christine Dwyer), and her children is perfect and believable. Dwyer is sweet as a doting and devoted mother.

The Llewelyn Davies boys are simply wonderful. Their acting chops were just as strong as the adults in the show.

Veteran actor John Davidson plays theatre producer Charles Frohman. He is the perfect blend of grumpy and a guy who finds his love of theatre again.

You may not remember any of the songs, but you will remember what it was like to have a child-like imagination.

Even though there are few sad moments, it is masked by some lighthearted and family friendly fun.

Finding Neverland is a pure joy!
