Theatre review by Steve Duffy –
Halloween comes a little early to the North Shore Music Theatre….
Young Frankenstein is a monster of a hit musical based on Mel Brooks’ classic comedy film masterpiece. This wickedly inspired re-imagining of the legend of Frankenstein is the story of the bright young doctor Frankenstein (that’s Fronkensteen) who travels to Transylvania to complete the masterwork of his grandfather by bringing a corpse to life.
Tommy Labanaris is perfectly cast as the mad scientist Dr. Frankenstein.
Brooke Lacy shines as Inga, Frankenstien’s sexy assistant, who shows off some impressive yodeling while performing “Roll in the Hay.”
Sandy Rosenberg is wonderful as Frau Blucher. Her song “He Vas My Boyfriend” was my favorite performance of the show. Brittney Morello plays Frederick’s vapid fiancée Elizabeth with a lot of fun and gusto.
Brad Bradley as Igor is hilarious solely for how much he seems to love his role.
The show’s showstopping musical number “Puttin’ on the Ritz” was definitely a highlight, but all of the musical numbers were all infectious and toe-tapping.
There was so much laughing from the audience it seemed to fuel the cast even more.
It’s beyond good – NSMT’s Young Frankenstein is fun and incredibly enjoyable. This musical should be on everyone’s ‘must-see’ list.
