Film review by Steve Duffy –
The unbelievable but true story of four young men who brazenly attempt to execute one of the most audacious art heists in US history. Determined to live lives that are out of the ordinary, they formulate a daring plan for the perfect robbery, only to discover that the plan has taken on a life of its own.
Who hasn’t watched a heist movie and thought “I could do that.” Well, four University of Kentucky students thought the same exact thing and attempt to do it, by stealing a multimillion-dollar art book collection from the college library
Director Bart Layton does a great job bringing this true story to life on the big screen. I love the way the film breaks away from a traditional storytelling. Within the film, the real guys give interviews with some sound bites from their parents and teachers.
The amateur criminals: Spencer (Barry Keoghan), Warren (Evan Peters), Chas (Blake Jenner), and Eric (Jared Abrahamson) all deliver edgy and thrilling performances.
American Animals is a crazy heist movie weaving in a documentary that is a fun and crazy ride.
RATING: R for language throughout, some drug use and brief crude/sexual material
RUNTIME: 120 mins
