5 Questions is a series by Steve Duffy –

Cress Williams stars as Jefferson Pierce, aka Black Lightning, in The CW’s new drama “Black Lightning.”

Jefferson Pierce is gifted with the superhuman power to harness and control electricity, he used those powers to keep his hometown streets safe as the masked vigilante Black Lightning, but he left the Superhero days behind. Almost a decade later, Pierce’s crime-fighting days are long behind him…or so he thought.

SD: What’s it like to get to be a superhero?

CW: It is really, really awesome! It is a dream come true to play this character.  From an acting standpoint, it is also challenging. You are playing two different characters and you really have to keep them separate. It is also physically challenging too. I really need to stay in shape to do all the stunts and fights.

SD: What made you want to take on the role of Jefferson Pierce aka is Black Lightning?

CW: I love superheroes so that’s the first thing that attracted me to the show. After digging into the script and storyline, I fell in love more with Jefferson than Black Lightning because of who Jefferson is as a person and a man.

SD: Until lately, black superheroes have been in supporting roles, what does it mean to you to be the lead?

CW: Personally, it’s amazing! I am excited and incredibly blessed to be a part of this show. Generally speaking as a black man and playing a lead character, I think we have come a long way. There still needs to be more changes across all ethnic groups. We are no longer just secondary roles, but we are in the forefront.

SD: Is there a superpower that Black Lighting doesn’t have that you wished he did?

CW: I love that I get to fly! Every little kids dreams about it, so getting to do it on the show is really awesome. I hope that I get to do more of it. I would love for him to have the power of teleportation. It would be really awesome to travel anywhere I want.

SD: What are you looking forward to most about Boston Comic Con?

CW: I’ve never been to Boston, so I am really excited to visit. Since I am still new to the convention scene, it has been a lot of fun traveling to the different ones because they are all so different. Plus, meeting the fans is always a lot of fun.

Season 1 is currently playing on Netflix’s.
