5 Questions is a series by Steve Duffy –

Drew Anthony is an internationally-known musician, singer, and instructor. Since receiving his B.F.A. in jazz voice performance, the New Haven   Connecticut- born entertainer has established himself as one of the finest singers in the Tri- State area. Also called “Manhattan’ s Smoothest Crooner,” he has produced his own musical show titled “The American Standards,” a hit on many stages ranging from the Foxwoods Resort Casino in Connecticut to the famed Dannyʼ s Skylight Room Cabaret in NYC.

SD: Are you a Dean Martin impressionist or impersonator?

DA: That’s a good question. I consider myself an actor playing the part of Dean Martin. My intention has always been to portray him in a natural and fun way.

SD: Before stepping into the spotlight, how do you get into character?

DA: Nothing specific, expect I put on a tux. For me, it’s about switching me off and turning him on.

SD: What’s the most important thing for you to nail about Dean?

DA: Entertaining the audience is my main concern. I want to make them comfortable, so they can enjoy themselves. Dean had the great ability to look like he wasn’t working hard. Capturing his relaxing and natural presence on stage and having fun is what I try to nail in every performance.

SD: Best part of playing Dean Martin?

DA: I have always loved to entertain. Singing old songs with my grandmother are some of the fondest memories that I have. Performing them as Dean Martin is the icing on the cake.

SD: Why are people still interested in Dean Martin?

DA: The more times change, the more we long for the good old days.  Dean didn’t have to work hard to be a star, like the stars of today. They spend way too much time getting attention then working. Dean was just doing what he loved to do. Concerts today are so full of special effects, you are not really enjoying the performer. Today, it is all about the package and not the talent.
