Film Review by Steve Duffy –
There is a reason this film wasn’t released for 2 years – welcome to January! The month where Hollywood tries to bury their mistakes.
A group of researchers are in an underwater lab at eleven thousand meters deep, when an earthquake causes the vehicle to be destroyed and exposes the team to the risk of death, they are forced to walk deep into the sea with insufficient oxygen to try to survive.
However, as they move across the sea floor, they discover the presence of a deadly creature.
Midway through the movie, I didn’t really care what happens to the cast. Kristen Stewart tries to do her best and she may be the highlight of the cast, but her acting is just terrible. The rest of the cast are all one-dimensional characters and nothing more. T.J .Miller was the comic relief of the group and his smart remarks are awkward and ill-fitted for the situation. Vincent Cassel and John Gallagher Jr. delivered fine performances with the limited materiel that they are given.
“Underwater” is a survival movie in the same vein as “Alien” and DeepStar Six,” but unfortunately it doesn’t have the same successful format. The CGI is iffy which is a shame, because the monsters are kind of cool in a creepy way.
I would skip this film and see something else.
Rating: PG-13 for sci-fi action and terror, and brief strong language
