The Downtown Lynn Neighborhood Association is excited to announce Neighborfest 2009 at Tatiana’s Restaurant this Thursday, October 15th at 7:00pm.

Neighborfest is an annual October celebration, and like the traditional Octoberfest, it brings friends and neighbors together for a good time. However, DTLna’s Neighborfest is also a fundraiser, with this year’s beneficiary being The Food Project. Their “…mission is to grow a thoughtful and productive community of youth and adults from diverse backgrounds who work together to build a sustainable food system.” They have offices in downtown and are responsible for the vegetable gardens in the lot between Munroe and Oxford Streets.

In addition to supporting the efforts of The Food Project, DTLna is hoping to bring together representatives from neighborhood associations across Lynn in order to foster friendships, cooperation, and even to talk shop about maintaining neighborhood groups. “We have a lot to learn from each other. DTLna is still a newcomer on the scene and we’re impressed by what we see from groups such as Friends of Lynn  & Nahant Beach and the Goldfish Pond Association” says Seth Albaum, a DTLna founder. “The East Lynn Community Association is also doing great work.”

“We’re asking $10 at the door, which will include a nice spread of finger food, DJ entertainment and raise money for The Food Project” says Albaum. Also at the door,  raffle tickets will be on sale for prizes such as two tickets to Ernie and the Automatics at Lynn Auditorium, a Food Project gift basket, and more! Tatiana’s regular menu will also be available.

Mayor Clancy and LynnHappens.com are also contributors to this year’s Neighborfest.

Last year’s Neighborfest drew over seventy people to meet and talk informally with elected officials, and to hear speeches from some, including Mayor Edward J. “CHIP” Clancy, JR., James Cowdell of the EDIC, and Council President John Timothy Phalen, many of whom are expected to be there again this year. Funds from last year went to support Girls Inc.

The Downtown Lynn Neighborhood Association has been referred to as a “Fun” group due to the social nature of many of its events, but it is also deeply committed to furthering the strong sense of community already felt by many downtown residents. Through the efforts of its members, DTLna has organized clean-ups, historic walking tours of the neighborhood, an art salon and food drive featuring works from area residents, and much more. DTLna has also helped to make residents feel more connected to their government by encouraging participation in public hearings and interaction with City officials. And DTLna also strives to connect residents with area businesses and non-profits through its events.
