Now celebrating 15 years, Trails & Sails is an annual celebration of the historic, cultural and natural treasuresfound in the Essex National Heritage Area. Organized by the Essex National Heritage Commission, more than4,000 attendees are expected to take part in a diverse line up of events appealing to everyone from CivilWar buffs and art lovers to “foodies”, paddlers, bikers and more. This is LCA’s sixth year of showcasing Lynn landmarks during the Trails & Sails weekends.
The Grand Army of the Republic Memorial Museum, circa 1885, a National Register of Historic Places property, is likely the United States’ largest GAR building. Among many surprises is the jaw-dropping Victorian Grand Hall with 1243 civil war photos. See the last civil war confederate flag to fly over Richmond, VA, given to Lynn civil war veterans as a token of friendship, documents signed by Abraham Lincoln; as well as WWII and Spanish War artifacts. Tread a time warp with great treasures, photographs of bygone centuries, and learn why The Grand Army of the Republic was an influential movement in American history. Located at 58 Andrews Street in Lynn, the Museum is not handicap or stroller accessible. Visitors must climb at least one full flight of stairs (3-story building plus basement)- but is well worth the climbing if you can do it! This venue will be open to the public from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday, September 17th.
